At Stage Express we work on the principle that everyone can sing. Learning to control your voice is no different to learning to play any musical instrument.
We use an unconventional approach to vocal coaching because we believe all kinds of music are important in developing the performer. We include jazz, pop, rock, classical, musical theatre and other styles to provide the student with a broad spectrum of musical awareness.
We teach the students all the skills needed to feel confident on a stage or set. We use a variety of improvisational scenarios and script material from pantomime to Shakespeare giving the student a breadth of dramatic awareness and performance experience.
Stage Express uses physical theatre and movement techniques to develop choreography skills. This type of dance, which includes contemporary, street and modern styles, is the best for developing all-round stage skills and is the most accessible for people with little previous experience. It also develops the student's ability to use movement of the body to express artistic ideas.

The performing arts industry requires all-round competent and adept young performers. Stage Express has been created to help performing arts students meet this demand. Even if the student has no aspiration to become a professional performer, the skills learned from “doing it properly” will last a lifetime.
Structured around defined key skills, the lessons are planned so that each discipline of singing, acting and choreographed movement, is delivered with additional training in essential stagecraft skills. Our National Curriculum-linked syllabus is backed by the Trinity Guildhall College of London requirements. We deliver best practice technique training, industry respected qualifications and full-scale performances.
We aim to provide the all-round experience of technique training, industry respected exams, and professional standard performances.
There are three terms per year shadowing the normal weekday schools though without a half-term break. All terms include technique training and opportunities to perform however; each term has a particular focus:
Term 1 – Technique Training
Term 2 – Examinations
Term 3 – Full Scale Production
Weekly 4-hour long sessions include a 60-minute teaching period in each of singing, acting and choreographed movement a 20-minute break, and a 30-minute workshop session. The remaining 10 minutes is taken up by registration/notices etc.
Trinity Guildhall group musical theatre exams are taken by all main school students.
Why should students take exams?
For the students...
The students acquire a sense of achievement, and grow their confidence. They also learn the discipline of bringing a piece of work up to examination standard.
For the Parents…
Taking higher grade exams each year demonstrates the improvement and progression of their children.
For the Teachers…
Examinations by an external body validates and maintains the quality of our teaching. The calibre and quality of our work has been commended by The Trinity Guildhall board.
The workshop session covers general topics such as audition technique, stage/performance skills, sound/microphones awareness etc. Visiting professionals provide master classes on topics such as TV or classical acting, comedy, rhythm, song interpretation etc. This time is also used as a casting session for visiting casting directors/agents.
Stage Express students perform in front of classmates, in front of the whole school and in front of whole theatre audiences.
Stage Express holds a full-scale annual show including all of the students with costumes, lighting and sound.
Stage Express also holds an end of term presentation in the autumn for each individual school.
The aim of the live performances is to bring together everything that the students have learnt in order to perfect a piece of work to performance standard.
